For our degree project, Martina Norell and Mathilda Tham explored the future of fashion. We based our collection on interviews with scientists, people of different faiths, creatives from different fields – including my hair stylist. We sourced some organic wool and cotton (which was not easy at the time). In contrast to a dominant subdued palette, we hand dyed many different colours. We reenvisioned the typical young bride of the catwalk show as an older, wise woman. The term urban nomad refers to the transience, mobility, age and gender fluidity we observed in our exploration. In hindsight I can see that the work on this collection was our way to make fashion relevant to society and to find a space for ourselves as both creative and critical designers.
Urban Nomad was a degree project in fashion at Beckmans College of Design, Stockholm, 1994.
